BELLA'S BUTTERFLIES ACTIVITIES

BUTTERFLY LIFE CYCLE

Bella is convinced there can't be any butterflies in her tummy. After all, she didn't swallow any caterpillars! Can you make an edible butterfly life cycle? Use a paper plate and divide it into 4 sections. Now find some food items to represent the eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly.

ILLUSTRATE AN IDIOM

Having butterflies in your tummy is an idiom. It means you have a fluttery feeling in your tummy because you are nervous or worried about something. Another idiom is 'Going on a wild goose chase'. How many other idioms have you heard of? What do they mean? Can you illustrate one?

CALMING BOTTLE/JAR

Bella was worried about doing a maths test. When you're worried about something, it sometimes helps to look at a calming bottle. Fill a plastic bottle or jar 3 quarters full of water. Add food colouring and a sprinkle of glitter. Replace the lid very well and give it a shake.

WORRY BOX

Make and decorate a worry box. It's important to talk about your worries and get them out. Write your worries down on little notes and post them in the box. After 10 minutes, close the box and say goodbye to your worries for the day.

BUTTERFLY ART

Design your own butterfly. Fold a large piece of paper in half and draw the shape of half a butterfly wing. Cut along the lines and unfold your paper. You should now have a complete butterfly outline. Decorate the wings making sure the pattern is symmetrical. You could use paint, craft materials or natural materials from outside, such as leaves.

BUTTERFLY IDENTIFICATION

How many different types of butterfly can you see outside? Can you make a tally for each one?
